Why Healthy Churches Learn to Rely on God First
We love to move fast.
As leaders, our instinct is to plan, build, launch, and fix. But the opening chapter of Acts gives us a different starting point.
Before the early church did anything… they waited.
Jesus Isn’t Done
Luke opens Acts with a subtle but powerful reminder: “I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach…” (Acts 1:1)
Began.
In other words, Jesus isn’t finished. Acts is not the story of what people did for God. It’s the story of what God continued to do through His people.
That alone should reshape how we lead.
The First Command: Wait
After the resurrection, Jesus gathers His followers, gives them their mission… and then says: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait…” (Acts 1:4)
Wait?
Before strategy. Before expansion. Before momentum.
Wait.
Waiting isn’t punishment. It’s preparation.
Think of a rocket on a launch pad. It may look like nothing is happening, but behind the scenes everything is being aligned. Systems are checked. Timing is set. Conditions are prepared.
That’s what God does in waiting seasons.
A Shift in Focus
The disciples still didn’t fully understand. They asked: “Are you going to restore the kingdom now?”
They were focused on a political outcome. Jesus redirected them to a spiritual mission:
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8)
- Start where you are.
- Love the people in front of you.
- Cross the lines you would normally avoid.
- Join God in reaching the world.
Healthy churches don’t just have activity. They have clarity.
They Waited… Together
After Jesus ascends, the disciples return to Jerusalem and gather in an upper room.
And what do they do?
They pray.
Not a strategy meeting. A surrender meeting.
This group included people who had failed, doubted, and scattered. Yet here they are… together, seeking God.
There’s a reason for that.
A single coal pulled away from the fire will cool quickly. But placed back in the fire, it burns bright again.
In a culture of isolated leaders and disconnected lives, shared dependence matters more than ever.
Leadership Takeaway
- Before God moves through a church, He moves within it.
- Before He sends us out, He draws us close.
So here’s the question for us as leaders: What if this year didn’t start with more activity… but with deeper dependence?
What if we became the kind of church that:
- Listens before it acts
- Prays before it plans
- Relies on God before relying on anything else
Because in the end, the strength of the church is not found in what we build…
But in how fully we depend on the One who builds it.
