Have you ever noticed how naturally people talk about the things they love?

Grandparents don’t need reminders to show pictures of their grandchildren. Sports fans can talk for hours about their favorite team. Ask someone about a hobby they’re passionate about, and you’ll probably hear more than you expected.

We naturally talk about the things that bring us joy.

I’ve noticed that in my own life. Nobody has to remind me to talk about the things I’m excited about.

The same is true spiritually.

I’ve found that the people who speak most naturally about Jesus are not usually the ones who feel pressured to evangelize. They’re the ones who are most captivated by him.

That helps explain the ending of Philippians 2:1-11.

Why Jesus Is Worthy of Worship

Over the previous verses, Paul describes Jesus’ incredible humility. He gave up privilege, became a servant, and willingly went to the cross.

Then everything changes.

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name…” (Philippians 2:9)

Notice how the passage begins: Therefore.

• Because Jesus humbled himself.
• Because he served.
• Because he obeyed.

God exalted him.

This wasn’t a promotion, as though Jesus somehow became greater than he was before. Rather, his resurrection, ascension, and enthronement publicly declared what had always been true.

Jesus is alive. And Jesus is King.

That matters because Christianity isn’t simply about following a set of teachings. It’s about following a living Savior.

More Than a Great Teacher

Paul goes on to say that Jesus has “the name above every name.” In the first century, this was a radical claim.

The Roman Empire declared that Caesar was lord. Caesar demanded loyalty and ultimate allegiance.

Christians responded with a different confession: Jesus is Lord.

They weren’t merely saying Jesus was important. They were declaring that he alone deserved their highest loyalty.

Some believers even lost their lives rather than call Caesar “Lord.”

Paul goes even further by applying words from Isaiah that were originally spoken about God himself directly to Jesus.

His point is unmistakable. Jesus isn’t simply a good teacher or a moral example. He shares the very identity of God.

That’s why Christians don’t merely admire Jesus. We worship him.

Joy That Overflows

Paul concludes by looking ahead to a future day when every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

He’s not writing these words to frighten people. He’s writing to encourage them.

Remember, Paul is writing from prison. The church in Philippi is facing pressure. Rome appears powerful.

Paul reminds them that appearances can be deceiving. Jesus is still on the throne.

That’s a truth we need just as much today.

• When life feels uncertain…
• When you receive a phone call you never wanted…
• When anxiety about the future keeps you awake…
• When someone you love seems farther from God than ever…

Jesus is still Lord.

The Reason We Live Differently

As I look back over Philippians 2:1-11, something stands out.

Paul begins by talking about unity, humility, and service. But he ends with Jesus.

Why?

Because those qualities only make sense when we understand who Jesus is.

• Unity matters because Jesus is Lord.
• Humility matters because Jesus is Lord.
• Service matters because Jesus is Lord.

Paul doesn’t finish this chapter by giving us a strategy for talking about our faith. He simply gives us a bigger view of Jesus. And perhaps that’s the lesson we need most.

The more clearly we see Jesus… The more naturally we’ll talk about him.

After all, we always talk about what we love most.
