Trusting God with the Door

Wouldn’t it be nice if God handed us a five-year plan?

Where you’ll live. Where you’ll work. Every major decision already mapped out. Even better, we’d know how the story ends.

But that’s rarely how God works.

Throughout the book of Acts, we discover something different. God usually reveals His direction one step of obedience at a time.

When God Says “No”

In Acts 16, the Apostle Paul is traveling, making plans, and looking for opportunities to share the gospel. Surprisingly, the Holy Spirit blocks him from going where he intended.

Not once. Twice.

Paul wasn’t running from God like Jonah. He was trying to serve Him faithfully. Yet every door seemed to close.

We often assume:

• An open door means we’re in God’s will.
• A closed door means we’ve failed.

But what if some of God’s greatest acts of guidance sound like the word “No”?

Perhaps you’ve experienced that. The job you didn’t get. The relationship that ended. The opportunity that never materialized.

You may not understand it today, but later you’ll discover that God was directing and redirecting your steps. Every closed door was preparing Paul for the right one.

God Usually Gives the Next Step, Not the Whole Journey

After those closed doors, Paul receives a vision calling him to Macedonia. Notice what God doesn’t provide. He doesn’t hand Paul a detailed itinerary.

Paul knows only enough to take the next step. So he starts packing. That’s what obedience looks like.

No one ever outgrows the next step of obedience. Following Jesus has always been about trusting Him one decision at a time.

God Is Already Ahead of You

Paul eventually arrives in Philippi, a major Roman city. At first, nothing dramatic happens. No large crowds. No miracles. Just several days of ordinary faithfulness.

Sometimes following God feels remarkably ordinary. Yet ordinary obedience is still obedience.

Then Paul meets Lydia, a successful businesswoman who was spiritually searching.

Luke tells us something remarkable: “The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.”

Paul wasn’t responsible for changing her heart. God already was at work.

Before Paul arrived in Philippi, God was there. Before Lydia heard the gospel, God was preparing her.

The same is true today. When you walk into work tomorrow, God is already there. When you knock on your neighbor’s door, God is already there.

Trust the God Who Opens Doors

Acts 16 reminds us that God’s greatest open door wasn’t found in Macedonia. It’s found in Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, God opened the way for every person to know Him.

If you’re following Jesus today, ask Him to show you your next faithful step. Most Spirit-led lives are built through ordinary acts of obedience.

And if you’re exploring faith, consider this possibility: Maybe you’re not reading these words by accident.

Perhaps God is opening a door for you, too. He may never give you the whole map.

But He has promised to guide your next step.
