In 1955, an African-American Christian woman refused to surrender her seat to a white man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Many see Rosa Parks as the mother of the civil rights movement and consider her act one of courage. But Rosa called her decision an act of faith. She believed God would give her the strength to endure whatever she had to face. This simple act of faith helped ignite a movement of change. As a person of faith, there will be times when you will have to step outside of what is comfortable in order to do the right thing. Known as the “Brown Bomber,” Joe Louis burst onto the boxing scene in 1935 to become one of America’s first black sports stars. He appeared unbeatable until 1936. That’s when he fought Max Schmeling, a German fighter who was the personal favorite of Adolph Hitler. Schmeling defeated Louis and Hitler branded him an Aryan hero. The two fought again in 1938 in front of 70,000 people at Yankee Stadium. Promoters billed it as the battle between America and the Nazis. The match was filled with racial and political implications. Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. People seem nicer, except in checkout lines. Christmas music with words about Jesus gets played in stores other than Chick-fil-A. And who doesn’t love pictures with Santa? How do you feel about Christmas? Depending on your experiences growing up, Christmas may not give you the warm fuzzies. Perhaps there is an empty chair around the dinner table. Regardless of our personal experiences or feelings, Christmas is a reminder that God offers us the opportunity to be led by a Wonderful Counselor. Isaiah is an interesting character in the Bible. He’s known as one of the Major Prophets and will be quoted in the New Testament over 65 times. As a prophet, Isaiah had worked with godly rulers and ungodly rulers. In that sense, not much has changed. During the time we’re going to study, Isaiah is working with one of…
