A Life Transformed

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to change?

Every January, millions of people make resolutions. We start diets, commit to exercising, promise to be more patient, or determine to break an old habit. Sometimes we make progress. Sometimes we don’t.

Which raises a deeper question: Why do some people experience real, lasting change while others seem to stay the same?

Acts 19 gives us a compelling answer. Discipleship is allowing Jesus to transform every area of our lives.

Real Transformation Begins with Truth

When Paul arrived in Ephesus, he didn’t look for quick wins or emotional experiences. Instead, he devoted himself to teaching.

For three months he taught in the synagogue. When opposition arose, he moved to the lecture hall of Tyrannus, where he continued teaching every day for two years (Acts 19:8-10).

Why so much teaching?

Because people don’t change simply because someone gives them good advice. They change when they encounter God’s truth.

Paul wasn’t sharing personal opinions or offering self-help principles. He was proclaiming the good news about Jesus and the kingdom of God.

The same principle holds true today.

If you want to become physically healthy, you need more than motivation. You need truth about nutrition, exercise, and healthy habits.

If you want to become financially healthy, you need more than good intentions. You need sound principles that reshape how you think about money.

Spiritual growth works the same way. Jesus transforms us by renewing our minds with His truth.

Counterfeit Faith vs. Authentic Faith

Luke then records one of the most unusual stories in the book of Acts.

Some men attempted to cast out demons by using Jesus’ name as though it were a magic formula. The result was disastrous. The evil spirit responded, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” (Acts 19:15).

The problem wasn’t that they had heard about Jesus. The problem was that they wanted His power without submitting to His authority. That’s the difference between counterfeit faith and authentic faith.

It’s a question every believer should ask from time to time: Who is really in control of my life?

Authentic faith is more than believing certain facts about Jesus. It’s surrendering our lives to Him.

A Changed Heart Produces a Changed Life

The chapter reaches its climax when many of the new believers publicly confess their former practices and burn their expensive scrolls.

Those scrolls represented far more than paper and ink. They symbolized their old way of life, their security, and in many cases, their livelihood.

Why would anyone willingly destroy something so valuable? Because they had found Someone who was infinitely more valuable. That’s what repentance looks like.

Repentance isn’t merely feeling guilty. It isn’t trying harder or becoming more religious. It’s turning away from whatever competes with Jesus and turning toward Him in trust.

Notice that Luke doesn’t celebrate the size of their sacrifice. He celebrates the greatness of the Savior they had found.

What “Scrolls” Are We Still Holding?

Most of us don’t have ancient scrolls to burn. But we all have things we’re tempted to cling to. For some, it’s the need for approval. For others, it’s control, comfort, status, success, or financial security.

Following Jesus always changes something. Not overnight. Not perfectly.

But steadily over time, the Holy Spirit reshapes our priorities, our relationships, our speech, and our desires.

That’s why discipleship is never simply about accumulating more biblical knowledge. It’s about allowing God’s truth to transform the way we live.

When Jesus changes a life, the impact never stops with one person. It spreads to families. To friends. To workplaces. To neighborhoods. And ultimately, to entire communities.

That’s how the gospel continues to grow—one transformed life at a time.
