Remember Who You Are (1 Peter 2:9-10)

There’s a guy I play pickleball with who never quite gets my name right. Some days I’m Jeff. Other days I’m Roger. I just roll with it. But it’s a funny reminder that names matter. Identity matters.

The truth is, a lot of Christians have forgotten who they are.

  • We let the world define us.
  • We let our past haunt us.
  • We wear labels that God never gave us.

But Peter gives us a better name. He says, “Remember who you are.”

Who Are You, Really?

Here’s what Peter says:

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…” (1 Peter 2:9)

Let’s unpack that.

🟡 You are a chosen people

You’re not a mistake or a leftover. God picked you. Not because you were the smartest or most talented—but simply because He loves you.

In a world that makes people feel forgotten or rejected, this truth is powerful: You matter to God. You’re part of His plan.

🟣 You are a royal priesthood

In the Old Testament, priests had access to God. Kings had authority from God. Peter says you have both.

If you’ve given your life to Jesus:

  • You can talk to God anytime.
  • You represent Him to the world.

That’s not a small thing.

🔵 You are a holy nation

To be holy means to be set apart. God didn’t call you to blend in—He called you to shine.

This isn’t about being “better than” anyone else. It’s about being different for a purpose.

🟢 You are God’s special possession

One translation says “God’s own possession.” That means you belong to Him—and not in a cold, legal sense.

The God who made galaxies looks at you and says, “That one’s mine.”

He doesn’t just put up with you. He delights in you.

Don’t Forget It

We get into trouble when we forget who we are. We start listening to old voices and worn-out labels:

  • Failure.
  • Not good enough.
  • Forgotten.
  • Unworthy.

But those names don’t belong to you anymore.

You are what God says you are.

What Do I Do with This?

Let’s keep it simple. Here are two next steps you can take this week:

Remind yourself daily who you are in Christ.

Write it down. Put it on your bathroom mirror or the lock screen on your phone.
Something like: “I am chosen. I am loved. I am called.”

Live it out by praising God wherever you are.

That doesn’t just mean singing at church. It means showing kindness, being courageous, offering forgiveness, or speaking truth with love.

One Last Thing

When the world tries to call you something else…
When your past comes knocking…
When discouragement creeps in…

Remember who you are.

Because when you remember who you are, you’ll also remember what you’re here to do.
