The Holy Spirit as Our Teacher

By Church
Years ago, I read Robert Fulghum's book, “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” It was based on a simple idea: we learn many basic principles early in life. For example ... play fair, don’t hit people, remember to flush when you're finished. Well, at least most people learned this stuff by kindergarten! I have people ask me all the time, “Ken, when will I get this Jesus-stuff all figured out?” Why do they ask? Because, to them, it seems like it’s taking a long time. These are smart people -- book smart, street smart. They’ve raised children and started businesses. Their frustration isn't the result of a lack of intelligence or desire. But following Jesus isn’t the same as earning your college degree. It's not a matter of signing up for class, passing your test, and graduating four years spiritually mature and just like Jesus. While…

Our Counselor and Advocate (video)

For many people, the Holy Spirit is the least understood person in the Trinity. Or even worse … he’s misunderstood. But why does this matter when you believe in Jesus and read your Bible? It matters because – according to Jesus – the Holy Spirit equips, enables, and empowers true Christian living. When we don’t understand who the Holy Spirit is and what he does, what happens? We default to our own power and abilities.Watch more videos at the Mountainview YouTube channel. Looking for a Speaking Coach? The most successful people are not always the smartest people. Our Counselor and Advocate

By Church
For many people, the Holy Spirit is the least understood person in the Trinity. Or even worse -- he’s misunderstood. This reminds me of a comedian from the 1970s and 80s who appeared on the Gong Show. He would come out with a paper bag over his head, with holes cut out for his eyes and mouth, and told corny (i.e., dad) jokes. He called himself The Unknown Comic. In some ways, the Holy Spirit is the unknown comic of the Trinity. It's not that he has a corny sense of humor, but few people really understand who he is. You might be thinking, “But Ken, why does this matter? I believe in Jesus and read my Bible.” According to Jesus, it matters because the Holy Spirit equips, enables, and empowers people to follow him. When we don’t understand who the Holy Spirit is and what he does, what happens?…

Real Connection (video)

By Church
Throughout this short letter, John’s feelings towards Gaius are obvious – he really loves him. As he closes the letter, he expresses his desire to not have to communicate by pen and ink but hopes to talk face to face. John is expressing a very natural desire, one created within by God: to know and be known, to be connected to others beyond superficial means. Our modern digital culture has allowed to be more connected and disconnected than ever before. The church provides a community in which people can build deep relationships.Watch more videos at the Mountainview YouTube channel. Looking for a Speaking Coach? The Glory of Worship (video)

By Church
God is the reason why we worship. We gather together as believers to remember, celebrate, and honor who God is and what he has done. This is the starting point of worship – not styles, forms, preferences, or strategies. The Hebrew writer reminds his readers that as Christians they have been given new access to God through Jesus the mediator. As a result, we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken – an eternal, everlasting kingdom. Knowing this, we are to be thankful and worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.Watch more videos at the Mountainview YouTube channel. Looking for a Speaking Coach?
