Have you ever been given a tool or gadget that you never actually used?
Maybe it sat in a drawer. Maybe it stayed in the box. Maybe you weren’t even sure what it was for.
That’s how many of us treat the gifts God has given us. We receive them, but we leave them on the shelf.
But Peter makes this clear:
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…” (1 Peter 4:10)
Yes, You Have a Gift
That phrase “each of you” is key. It means no believer is left out.
Spiritual gifts aren’t just for pastors, musicians, or public speakers. They’re for everyone who follows Jesus.
Paul says the same thing:
“To each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)
Every believer has a spiritual gift—no exceptions. And every gift is meant to bless others.
So the question isn’t: Do I have a gift? The better question is: Where can I use the gifts I’ve been given?
You’re Not Just a Tool—You’re the Right Tool
Think about a toolbox. Every tool has a purpose—even the weird-looking ones.
Ever seen a right-angle drill attachment? It looks strange, but it reaches tight corners a regular drill can’t.
That’s how it works in the church. You may not look like everyone else, but you have a purpose no one else can fill.
Peter reminds us:
“…as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10b)
You don’t own your gift—you manage it for God. And if your gift only benefits you, you’re probably misusing it.
God didn’t design you to be a bucket—just holding everything in. He designed you to be a hose—letting His love and grace flow through you.
Speak and Serve with God’s Strength
“If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides…” (1 Peter 4:11)
Some gifts are up front. Others happen quietly behind the scenes. But both matter, and both represent Jesus.
A common reason people don’t use their gifts? They don’t feel “ready.”
But honestly—when are you ever fully ready to:
- Get married?
- Start a family?
- Step out in faith?
You don’t wait until you feel ready. You trust God to give you the strength.
Think of a relay race. You don’t just hold the baton; you run with it. But you don’t run alone. God is both your coach and your energy.
Point It All Back to God
Peter finishes with this:
“…so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory…” (1 Peter 4:11)
The goal of your gifts isn’t applause. It’s not attention. It’s worship.
Our culture loves the spotlight. But as followers of Jesus, we’re called to reflect the light—not absorb it.
When someone thanks you for serving, just say: “I’m glad it helped. But God gets all the credit.”
Final Thought
What does God say when He opens His toolbox?
He doesn’t say, “What is this thing?” Instead, he looks at you and says: “That’s exactly what I need for this job.”
You may not be flashy. You may not be recognized by others. But you’re perfectly designed for what God has called you to do.
So don’t leave your gift on the shelf.
Use what God gave you.
