The Holy Spirit as Our Guide

By Church
A few years ago, I made it to the top of Mt. Bierstadt. While it was a personal achievement, it wasn’t like I was climbing Mt. Everest! I didn’t have to practice or buy special equipment. And … I didn’t need a Sherpa – one of those guys who guides climbers to the top of Everest. While it’s fine climbing Mt. Bierstadt without a guide, it would be more than foolish to try Everest on your own … in fact, it would likely be fatal. Now, you're probably thinking: “Uh, Ken. I know that. I would never try to climb Everest on my own.” While that may be true of literal mountains, here's what I've seen in over 30 years of working with people: Couples navigate the challenges of marriage without a guide. Students battle addictions without a guide. People try to be good Christians without guide. While we have…

While it’s fine climbing Mt. Bierstadt without a guide, it would be more than foolish to try Everest on your own … in fact, it could be fatal. While many people would never climb a literal mountain without a guide, I’ve seen couples navigate the challenges of marriage without a guide. Or students battle addictions without a guide. I've even seen people try to be good Christians without guide. While we have free will to act and to choose, we are not to be self-directed followers of Jesus. God gives us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all the truth.Watch more videos at the Mountainview YouTube channel. Looking for a Speaking Coach? The Holy Spirit as Our Teacher (video)

Years ago, I read Robert Fulghum’s book, “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.” It was based on a simple idea: we learn many basic principles early in life. For example … play fair, don’t hit people, remember to flush when you’re finished. Well, at least most people learned this stuff by kindergarten! I have people ask me all the time, “Ken, when will I get this Jesus-stuff all figured out?” Why do they ask? Because, to them, it seems like it’s taking a long time. These are smart people — book smart, street smart. They’ve raised children and started businesses. Their frustration isn’t the result of a lack of intelligence or desire. But following Jesus isn’t the same as earning your college degree. It’s not a matter of signing up for class, passing your test, and graduating four years spiritually mature and just like Jesus. While…

For many people, the Holy Spirit is the least understood person in the Trinity. Or even worse … he’s misunderstood. But why does this matter when you believe in Jesus and read your Bible? It matters because – according to Jesus – the Holy Spirit equips, enables, and empowers true Christian living. When we don’t understand who the Holy Spirit is and what he does, what happens? We default to our own power and abilities.Watch more videos at the Mountainview YouTube channel. Looking for a Speaking Coach? The most successful people are not always the smartest people.
